Go make art!

Don't be surprised or alarmed if you find during the
first quarter that you're not getting to work on your work much. This
happened with a lot of us, maybe all of us. It wasn't until the 7th or
probably even the 8th week that I started getting things worked out so that
I could work on my own work regularly again, and everything's been great
ever since...I think.

the power of powerpoint...

LEARN IT!! or don't be afraid to ask how to get a slide show started. This particular skill will serve you very well in grad school.

Teaching Art?!?!

You might feel like you don't know what you're doing as a teacher of an art
class, and why should you? There's a good chance you've never taught a
college class before. Don't worry, a lot of us felt that way but everything's probably fine.
At any rate, it was pointed out to me by one of my great art teachers that any of us, faculty
or grads, must be crazy to think we can ever teach art (he meant it in the
good way).

Free Money

If you have a gas bill through AEP, or maybe anyone, go to this
website

http://www.odod.state.oh.us/cdd/ocs/regheap.htm
and they will give you money for the winter. It's a little bit of
paperwork, but they credited me with about $225 dollars. They
automatically send you a renewal form. You have to make and send a
photocopy of your GTA contract agreement and they will set you up.

FOOD!!

Northstar cafe sells day-old
(=not old ) gigantic, delicious cookies in the mornings for only $1.
That is also my tip for a study spot. You can pick up wireless from
the more atmospherically challenged Emack & Bolio's next door.

Other tip: food at the gym is better and healthier than most other on
campus venues.

Get some books..

School tip:
I think it is really handy that you can request to have any library book sent directly to your mailbox. Just choose "my office" when indicating the pick-up location.

WORK OUT!

You are paying approximately $25 a month in fees for usage of the RPAC. So this means that you should get off your butt and out of your studio and hop onto a treadmill! Why not, it's a brand new million dollar facility and you are paying for it anyway..

explore class options

When you are looking for classes to take, check outside the Art Dept. Comparative Studies, Folklore, English, Women Studies, Philosophy, Art History (just to name a few) offer many alternatives. Even the folks at the RPAC offer fun classes like Yoga, Badmiton, and Karate! Take advantage of attending such a large university with such diverse class offereings.

Buck IDs

Hey, it's really important that you beat all the underclassmen to this task. Therefore you are beating really long lines and those thoughts as you look around you about how young they all look!
Head over to Linclon Tower on Canon Dr. and SMILE!

Get your Keys..

For all the newbies.. Get your keys made right away! You need a master key and your office/studio key.
Go to the Art Office in Hopkins Hall Rm. 146!

This Blog.

This blog is a result of general frustration and confusion that I experienced my first year as an art graduate student at Ohio State University. This is a great university with many opportunities. The problem is that I had to spend a good portion of my time trying to figure out where to find those opportunites. I hope this blog will provide some valuable advice for you new grads.
Good Luck!
